Japanese isn't a very hard language to learn. You should be able to get Japanese basics down through the lessons.
I might consider taking a Japanese course in University/College (if they offer it). That or I could go work in Japan for a year and come back speaking it fluently.

If you need help learning Japanese, talk to me. Also Patrick is right, it isn't hard. Within one week of being in Japan I would say my understanding of the language increased by 20%. The shitloads of anime and the autodidacticism probably helped me here but I would say you can easily pick up enough spoken Japanese to get by. The real bitch is literacy though, get a study guide on Kanji and if you can look up some of the comics on iitran.secchan.net/img/ to use as a study guide since typically there will be comics in Japanese (also a variety of other languages if you were interested, not sure about German though). If possible obtain written work in Japanese to read of your own accord. Start forcing yourself to watch anime without subtitles. Start translating all of your favourite anime OPs into English. Do anything to exercise your understanding of Japanese and you will find yourself easily understanding it. Post Scriptum: Also talk to Samantha, Anthony Tran (great_teacher_inuyasha@hotmail.com), Kevin Leung (azumangadaioh_osaka_san@hotmail.com), and anyone else you know who can speak Japanese to some extent. The two guys I suggested are both study Japanese in University which is a luxury I'll probably never be able to afford. A few other things to keep in mind are joining various IRC channels based on studying Japanese. Here's a few off of the top of my head irc.freenode.net: #japanese,#nihongo irc.rizon.net: #japanese,#japanese.utf8 irc.undernet.org: #japanese 勉強に使用
