This is really a sentiment that can apply to much more than just rhythm and RTS games. Almost every game, sport, hobby or activity can be honed down to an art and perfected if you utterly dedicate yourself to it. Although not as severely, I fell into the same pitfalls of striving to become the master of practically worthless skills. The difference was that I was never really that great at anything. I was above average at Counter-Strike, absorbed dick at rhythm games, absolutely horrible at RTS games, didn't spend enough time typing shit out for WhatPulse, uninspired writer, pretty competitive race car driver, and generally pretty average at a lot of things. My helicopter pilot abilities in Battlefield 2 are probably the best thing I've ever achieved in a game, but I started too late and simply could never catch up to the more dedicated players stats wise. Besides that, I was rather humble to myself about my abilities despite my arrogance to hide it and knew full well that I would never have the patience and dedication to amount to the ridiculous "skill" exerted by the top of these fields. This constant realization I suppose kept me from ever falling into a serious grinding obsession, unless I actually enjoyed what I was doing. I tried StepMania and osu! and found them briefly amusing before becoming bored of them and moving on.
I don't really play games much anymore.
We were all pretty fucked during our teenage years in different ways. The image of Patrick you created for yourself is hard for me to shake. I have a hard time imagining whatever it is you do for entertainment now.

The woes of trying to be competitive while only being moderately good at most things

i still like sc2, i just don't let it control my life. i'm still a total scrub but once i let go of the realization that i'd never be good or caring that much about professional sc2 (only occasionally watching vods of players i like instead of staying up all night with 4chan nerds watching gsl at 3am), it became kind of fun. once i let go of the idea that i HAD to get to masters (or i was a loser) and spend hours playing, reading about build orders, playstyles, apm spam, trends in the metagame, map exploits and all that shit and just learned to enjoy the simple pleasure or rolling some guy with a bunch of mech or a crappy proxy rax build now and then, the game was manageable and innocent fun instead of some all consuming lifestyle. now i just want to focus on becoming a civil engineer because i realized being a guy who ACTUALLY builds shit in real life is way cooler than being some guy who can build mass starports on alterzim stronghold really fucking fast. even progamers think something like being a school teacher is a more important a career than what they do, i guess at some point i just lost sight of the simple things. theme of the thread
also tyler you were always awesome at something i'm sure a lot of us miss you doing: www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4CpypI7SOo&t=50sseriously i miss your songs

you're better than I am with a mouse I think, rofl. I haven't touched osu in awhile but I was mostly trying to fix a bunch of ranks on maps I've played too many times. finally got single digit A count because I'm autistic: only replay/score/video I've gotten recently that I liked fun fact: I've played this map over 1,000 times and this is the first time I got a top 50 score on it rip

That's a lot of plays. I think the most I have on a single map is around 300 from when I was new and tried to all-mod some easy maps and FC some maps that were too hard for me at the time.
