I suspect the way you kind of hold it under your arm exchanges some of your bodily heat to it. Just leave it in the garage or something during a very, very cold day and then start it up.
I've found ways of making this method work well. If I'm about to watch anime on my TV and I need as little lag as possible, I'll go outside and have a smoke in the garage while bringing my laptop with me. Usually by the time I'm done it's relatively cool and I can hook it up to my TV and watch at least 1 episode lag-spike free.
There's also playing Stepmania in the garage to avoid lag, but on a decently cold day my fingers get so cold that it makes playing difficult.

Yes, my jacket tends to insulate it a fair bit, although I try to carry it in a way that exposes the hard drive to the wind. The ACPI temperature reading seems to be pretty unreliable, so I like using the hard drive diode instead. I also try to keep the battery above freezing since temperatures below 0C can damage it. If I were to leave or use it in the garage or somewhere else, I'd probably remove the battery and use the AC adapter.
The TrackPoint owns so much when it's cold. The stiffness is amazing.

I'm pretty proud to use that OptiPlex GX260 of mine as a slave machine and general network whore.
By the way, the battery did refuse to charge until it was warm again. No actual damage was done though. I also gave it a nice few laps around Collingwood.
iPods are also lithium polymer tanks.
