I went to a job fair today at Rona. I got my app and filled it out, and on the back, there was a "PRE-EMPLOYMENT MATH SKILLS" section. Naturally, this is to weed out people who are not skilled in math, and lack cognitive thinking. Calculators aren't allowed.

Part A: Solve the following.
1) some addition question
2) some multiplication question
3) some subtraction question
4) some long division question

Part B: Solve the following problems.
1) A room measures 14' x 20', where the walls are 8' high. How many pieces of 8' x 4' drywall would you need to cover the entire surface area of the walls?
2) Ceramic tiles are 8" x 8", and a floor measures 4' x 6'. How many tiles would you need to cover the entire floor?
3) A customer is buying 20 2x4 8' long pieces of wood. Each piece is $4.75. What is the final cost?

Part C: Give the fraction equivalent of the following decimals.
1) .625
2) .33
3) .25
4) .325
5) .50


I found it funny because almost everybody I saw was struggling to fill this section out, and many just decided to leave it blank. Most of the people who didn't even bother TRYING were all black.

So yeah, considering how academically challenged the applicants I saw were, I'd say I have a decent chance.
