It's a pretty dumb premise; why not just learn to play a piano without the prompts? The point of SM isn't even remotely close to emulating an instrument. It's just smashing your keyboard because the noise it makes is nice.
I've played kbm and quite frankly, I could learn from sheet music faster than I could get accustomed to an 88-column screen.
Also, SM is supposed to be played on pad. That's why it was developed. Technically, Patrick, myself and anybody else who plays on kb is doing it wrong.

i have a keyboard for keyboardmania. Also, it supplies feedback on your note accuracy without having to adapt to a metronome or hire a tutor. Thus helping prevent me from becoming one of those idiots who plays the piano with no consistancy of tempo (the majority of people who are self taught piano here do that, butchering the peices they play).
Regardless, when you start double AA'ing stepmania at judgement difficulty, what point is there on trying to move up to AAA. You have passed the point where it is either fun or impressive to improve further. From there, it is way better to change platforms to something like beatmania.
