Don't get me wrong but you don't play Stepmania other than as a small gaming hobby therefore you should not talk as if you know how this game works and how the Stepmania community as a whole operates.
When you've been in a Stepmania community just as long as me (4 years now) or longer, you'd realize that people don't play to be the best at this game, they play for fun and sometimes competition with others. There is no single Stepmania player that's the best at this game. There are people who are good at certain aspects of Stepmania but not others (e.g. MA, Speed, Vibrating, Jacking, etc.). It's very rare to find a Stepmania player who can destroy all aspects of the game who isn't complete bullshit.
Also, it is fairly easy to differentiate who's bullshit at this game and who is not from simply looking at scores and comparing them as a whole. For example, people with fairly high inconsistencies with scores are typically bullshit. You could be amazing at video editing and trick people into believing in your legitimacy but in the end you're just trashing your reputation as a Stepman and you will be looked down upon by the entire community for cheating at a rhythm game that people play for fun. As an example, people who decide to hack on FFR to get good scores are permabanned and blacklisted. Thing is with Stepmania is that since it's open source you can't do anything about bullshit scores, however if you're part of a Stepmania community no one will care about your bullshit because you're just making yourself look terrible. Cheating in Stepmania is not tolerated so once you've been proven to be bullshit, you might as well stop playing this game until you choose to play legit like everyone else then you might have a chance at stepman redemption.
I play SM because I find it fun. I'm motivated to play it because there are a lot of other people who are relatively around my skill level in which I can compare scores to which can arguably be called "competitive" gameplay. I also find it very enjoyable to step files for myself and others to enjoy. And this took a few years to actually develop. I started stepping files back in 2007 however they were all complete shit files. My files didn't start meeting today's stepfile standards until just a few months ago.
Every good stepfile has a structure and theory to it. You don't just place arrows randomly and hope they go with a song. It's much more complex and technical than it seems to actually create a good file and I can't stress that enough. Anyone can step a shit file in 2 minutes and call themselves a step artist. But the actual acknowledged step artists in the community that step good files that meet today's standards only take up a small percentage compared to players (this includes me and Xiao).
Also for finding out the FPS that SM runs at go into the options menu and go under Graphics Options and turn on Show Stats. It'll display the FPS in which your SM runs at all times until you turn it off.
