He's probably listening to a 128 kbps MP3.

I'm actually impressed 8kbps vaguely resembles a song at all.

Sounds like the 70s.

but the 70s probably had better sounding records (when they were played) due to vinyls. studio recording hasn't actually gotten that much better in comparison, has it?
unless you're talking about listening to neutral milk hotel on your car radio in the 70s, which while impossible would probably sound a bit like that.

As far as perfect replication is concerned, recording equipment has far surpassed the capabilities of vinyls. As far as what actually sounds better, that matter is subjective.

so basically digitally released FLACs are the best for actually replicating exactly what happens in studio?

As far as release formats, I suppose so.

What makes that image is the picture of a pair of Sennheiser HD 598's on 4chan that would wipe the floor with any of those headphones and costs about the same.

yeah pmuch OP posted decent cans (along with basically everybody else) and then some guy posted that picture and several people were revolted. also lol those are the kadeem headphones in bottom right I bought these things in retrospect I could have made a better purchase but for a fairly portable pair of closed backs these made me happy for $150. also lol I can be a dj now. i was almost considering buying the #swag versions but the guy at cc convinced me I'd probably get robbed. also I own these things because they were like $40 lol if I got $10k handed to me right now I wouldn't even buy a car, I'd just buy a better pair of headphones and a pocket amp

At the $100 price range I'm a fan of the Sony MDR-7506 or their predecessor the MDR-V6.
