i'd just like to state for the record that i had an epiphany
i actually hate 4chan as much as i hate reddit now because they're both shit. xf is better than either of them
that's all, i know it wasn't a particularly important announcement but i had to get it off of my chest

Better to die a legend than to live a disgrace.

you know what
i get it now
this is why i hated cs so much and never went to class and just left
i hate the internet
i hate computers
i hate these boring shitty websites like facebook, twitter, 4chan, reddit and 9gag and all the other stupid bullshit people browse. porn sites have been host to more meaningful content
you don't have to think to make people talk, you just post the same boring predictable bullshit people have been posting for the last 10 years and people will reply to that
if you try to talk about something different, no one cares. no one has an attention span anymore. people just get confused, laugh it off and look at the next shitty image macro
everybody. i remember i was doing this shit 10 years ago and everybody thought i was a stupid boring little kid and told me to go outside. now full grown adults are doing it and no one cares because they're all doing it themselves.
i honestly just can't stand what the internet has done to people. it's made everybody into a boring, predictable assholes
i just want to let all you guys know that i really like you guys and that you're all cool people. you people have been funnier to me than all the bullshit i subject myself to on a daily basis
my announcement is you're all very nice individuals and i like you

So I just noticed this thread had replies in it and I figured I'd mention that I'm both glad and not glad that I didn't follow the obvious path of software development. On the one hand, I do very much enjoy programming and computer shit in general, and have a deep appreciation for the complex but strictly logical nature of it. However, I feel like the glory days of software development are long gone. Everything has gone from a general trend of functionality to aesthetics. From mobile platform apps (which I never had any interest in developing but are now the ungodly frontier of goddamn everything), to web sites, to what software still exists natively on operating systems, everything has taken significant steps back for the sake of broader usability and looking prettier than the competition. Simply take a look at the disgrace to professionals that is Final Cut X, or even the somewhat simplification of its competition Premiere CC, which decided to completely ignore that its primary user base were Final Cut professionals that ran from its new Windows Movie Maker interface. Windows 8 is the new Vista as far as the Metro interface is concerned. Too many websites use that bullshit infinite scrolling shit now, making it near impossible to keep track of wherever the fuck you are. Even Google, one of the last major companies to continue to keep functionality at the forefront, completely stripped the the shit out of their web and mobile apps to match their new brand aesthetic, including consistently butchering the fuck out of YouTube (the fact I just described a web service as an app disgusts me as well). To top it all off, I'm really not a fan of the excessive data mining going on at all times. The future of software is not one I want to be part of. Convergence has come at the great cost of raw desktop power functionality. If anything, I might want to relearn some languages for the sake of writing my own copies of programs that aren't complete shit. In addition, it saddens me that even Lenovo has caved and turned the venerable ThinkPad brand from productivity's best friend to just another shitty MacBook clone that just happens to have a nub on it. I can only take comfort in the fact that their design changes are almost universally hated by everyone who does anything even remotely productive. In writing all this, I realize now that computers, electronics, the internet and everything they encompass have all gone from being a productive medium to a consumptive one. All people want to do with their devices these days is play shitty cell phone games, look at pictures of cats and beat off. I want to blame the advent of smart phones for this general trend simply because their form factor and interface make them generally impractical for productivity.

mai fucking negro
this is exactly why i hated being in cs
all the people who were 'succeeding' were getting jobs developing shitty apps for companies like Apple or Facebook. Or they were joining Google and getting paid tons to basically develop new ways to spy on people. It's just fucking creepy. Basically if you're not designing some stupid shit that's going to be obsolete next year, they were doing something that was completely retarded and pointless, or they were working on some Skynet Alpha type shit. all I could think was, "nigga that shit is awful". my only regret at waterloo is not leaving the school sooner. even now it's weird to explain to people that I don't really regret leaving it, everything about majoring CS just seemed shitty.
and today I was literally looking at my thinkpad x200 tablet and thinking of getting something to replace it, and then I realized that it was probably one of the best products I could have owned. It had tablet functionality, a perfectly good keyboard, a nub, was very portable, had a nice screen, and really the only thing that I could ask for to improve it would be a webcam. I was looking through Samsung tablets and newer Lenovo laptops and all I could think was, "nigga that shit is awful". what happened to those awesome thinkpad designs that were portable and functional as fuck? it just looks god awful now. if I replace it it will probably be with a slightly newer thinkpad tablet, but not the shit they're trying to push now.
I dunno man, everybody clamors about engineering in terms of quantum computing, computer engineering and software engineering like it's the best thing ever but I realized somewhere down the line I just fucking hated everything about it. I'm going to be the old man teaching his kids how to fish while all the other dipshits are playing candy crush 4 with their kids. technology nowadays just seems like all of it has nothing to do with being functional, it's like computer technology has become so easy to produce it's become like mcdonald's. everybody wants a new ipod/iphone, they want to replace all their bullshit as soon as it gets broken (which its designed to) and then clamor over the next new bullshit. it's just bad.
I feel like civil engineering is a field where I can use my natural tendency towards building/mathematical things and use it for something that's actually good for people. making roads efficient, living space for all the immigrants slamming into Canada, keeping the water systems in Canada working well, managing the highway traffic, keeping the civil infrastructure environmentally friendly, things like that. no matter what kind of job I get in the future, if it's something that actually pertains to civil engineering, I'm sure I'll feel good about it. I haven't felt this excited to go to school and learn shit since I was a little kid.
honestly sometimes looking at people and realizing just how much privacy completely ceases to exist anymore and how consumptive/materialistic modern culture is, it just makes me wonder if i'm living in a dystopian sci-fi novel or something, bleak as that sounds. I just want to make shit work now.
