In total there are 26 represented franchises/games (Super Mario, Yoshi, Wario, Game and Watch, Donkey Kong, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem, Kirby, Punch Out, Star Fox, Pokemon, Duck Hunt, R.O.B., Earthbound, F-Zero, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Wii Fit, Miiverse, Dr. Mario, Xenoblade, Pac Man, Mega Man, Sonic the Hedgehog).
How do you feel about the roster? Also how do you feel about veterans like Solid Snake, Wolf, Lucas, Ice Climbers and Mewtwo being cut? Or heavily requested characters like King K Rool, Mach Rider, Isaac, Dixie Kong and Ridley not making it in?

Whether or not there will be additional characters made playable through the Wii U version or DLC has yet to be seen. However, it's very likely that these are the 48 available characters. Definitely the most in any Smash game (Smash 64 had 12 characters, Melee had 25, Brawl had 35).
