basically this is a thread where you list your favourite television shows. could be anything, in any language. documentaries, top gear, comedies, cartoons, etc.
here's my 10 of my favourites, in some sort of order. don't feel compelled to follow my lead, you could just list a few shows you really like.
10. Ren and Stimpy
I remember as a kid, this show had such an allure of taboo. Which is to say, my mother, stepfather and older brothers all hated the show and didn't want me to watch it, so I had to pussyfoot around to watch it. This show struck me with how disgusting Kricfalusi's drawings and imagined scenarios could be. Also the occasionally implied homosexual relations between Ren and Stimpy was pretty fun. I almost envied two guys who had such a close bound friendship, even if they try to kill each other sometimes.
Best Character: Stimpy, without him being retarded, Ren would have no one to scream at.
9. The Scooby Doo Show
This show is still as funny to me as it was 15 years ago. It's not as dated as the original "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?!" series, which I was considering listing here. I just enjoyed the scenarios more, and also characters like Scrappy Doo and Scooby Dum. Scooby Doo is probably still my favourite children's cartoon series. Freddie/Daphne still my OTP.
Best Character: Shaggy. I had no idea that I'd basically grow up to be as much of a weedhead as this guy. Seriously, Scooby Doo practically pioneered the idea of a cartoon that children should watch while eating cereal and teenagers should watch while stoned of out their minds.
8. Peep Show
This is seriously the only British comedy I've ever laughed at. And the only British show I've ever liked. Kuldeep can vouch for me with saying that this is probably one of the funnier shows ever written. Basically about a guy who's a nervous trainwreck of a human being who works at an office living with a lazy freeloader who gets at least 10x as much ass as he does.
Best Character: Mark. The only character to make me feel like a normal person.
7. Star Trek: The Next Generation
One of the best science fiction shows ever made. Classic iconic characters and scenarios, wonderfully acted and plenty of interesting ideas.
Best Character: Picard. The kind of leader everyone should try to find it in themselves to be.
6. The Bugs Bunny Show
When you watch Looney Tunes as a kid, you have no idea how genius the entire thing really is. So many racial and cultural stereotypes, so many television, literature and historical icons mocked. So many topics explored, so many classic characters. I really feel sad that kids these days will miss out on this classic show, I've tried watching the newer cartoons with my nieces and nephews, it just doesn't have the same kind of charm to it. An honourable mention goes out to the Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show.
Favourite Character: Sylvester. Why? "Sufferin Succotash!"
5. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
This is one of the funniest shows I've seen in years. The best thing about this show is just that all the characters are so distinct and funny in their own ways, everyone seems to have a favourite. The weirdos love Charlie, the tomboys love Dee, everybody loves Frank, the insecure and narcissistic love Dennis and the closeted homosexuals love Mac. Definitely one of the best sitcoms to come out after 2000.
Favourite Character: Charlie. Why? Because he's fucking Charlie.
Also, I really enjoy the theme song
4. The Simpsons
I'm not sure if it's really necessary to state why The Simpsons made this list. Even if the later seasons did change in tone and often times in quality, the first 8 seasons are remembered so warmly to me I can't think of it as anything besides the best cartoon ever made.
and who can forget all the coach gags?
3. The Sally Draper Show
sometimes referred to by it's official title.
It's actually hard for me to explain why this is one of the best shows I've ever watched. At first it seems very serious, a drama set in the early 1960s about advertising firms on Madison Avenue in Manhattan, focusing on Donald Draper. SOUNDS very serious and boring, but when you get down to it, the show is mostly about people constantly smoking and getting drunk in the office, openly sexually harassing female co-workers, having sex in the workplace, illegitimate pregnancies, Nixon vs Kennedy, the civil rights movement, post-WW2 America, women being bitchy and catty to each other all the time, men competing with themselves over who can have the most klout (and highest net worth) in the workplace. And the single most important part of the whole formula:Donald Sally Draper.
Never mind the fact that the show is supposedly called 'Mad Men', this is one of the most poorly titled shows of all time. Much better alternative titles:
The Draper Bunch
Everybody Loves Donald
Draper and Daughter
SpongeDon Draperpants
I Love Sally
DraperMan
Mad Women and Narcissistic Men
Someone Rescue Sally and Bob from All These Wacky Adults!
The Fresh Princess of Madison Avenue
Alfred Hitchcock Presents The Sally Draper Show
That's So Sally!
A lot of people think Don Draper is the main character of Mad Men. I guess I can't really blame them, he's a tall, dark and handsome man who's a rich corporate executive, can't walk two blocks without accidentally having an affair, is a genius at understanding advertising, practically drips with masculinity and can end almost all arguments with a single well placed one-liner. But I think the show makes a lot more sense when you realize that Sally Draper is actually the main character, and she's just recounting all the things her father told her he did; the show is basically about Sally Draper turning from precocious, adorable 8 year old into being her father's protege.
TOTALLY NOT THE MAIN CHARACTER
I mean, let's be honest, when the show started, it was about Donald Draper. But somehow, Kiernan Shipka managed to eventually outshine Jon fucking Hamm. Mixing her father bloody marys at age 8, running around the house with a plastic bag over her head, doing cartwheels and ballet in the living room while her parents scream at each other, kicking her retarded brother's ass when he does something dumb, going to the office as an 8 year old and bragging that when she grows up she'll have huge tits like Christina Hendricks, asking Harry if he "lies on top of" his black girlfriend at home (whom she initially asks if she's his maid). By the time the later seasons roll around, she's a cigarette smoking, whiskey drinking badass of a teenaged girl.
Sally Draper is 10/10 daughter material, most men can only hope they get a daughter who's half as much of a badass who serves you gin, even when you're someone like Don Draper.
here she is casually talking about murdering her own mother (betty)
she already understands relationships at a very young age
But at the end of the day, she's a total sweetheart
Honestly and truly, it's a drama for people who are really interested in business, commerce, marketing and American Culture. And Sally Draper. Also one of the best opening sequences in television.
2. Seinfeld
Once upon a time I asked myself, "What's the deal with Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David anyways?" So I ended up watching this show. What you end up with is a show that has characters you'll remember 10 years after you watch the shows, situations and lines that you'll laugh about at parties with people years upon years after you watched the show. Long story short, because enough people have said enough about this show, Seinfeld is the best sitcom ever made. I didn't even understand that sitcom was supposed to mean "Situational Comedy" until I watched this show and it clicked that the show is mostly fantastic because you have 4 great lead characters all tossed into various bizarre situations.
1. Star Trek: The Original Series
It doesn't really matter that this show was produced from 1966-1969, no sci-fi show has ever made the kind of impact this classic has. I watched this show when I was 21, and I could only walk away from it saying that this was the best TV show I had ever watched. There's just so much imagination in this show and so much optimism that humanity could one day find themselves having solved problems like world hunger, world wars, commerce and the like, and could focus on exploring the stars and discovering all the universe has to offer. The concept of Star Trek has fascinated generations of people for over 40 years, and it's definitely inspired many people to become scientists, astronomers, engineers and technologists.
This show also had the first interracial kiss ever broadcast on television, which was mostly due to William Shatner insisting on kissing Nichelle Nichols, and then purposefully silking every other take that the racist director wanted to use, until there was no choice left but to show it on TV.
Also, these three dudes practically invented the concept of bromance. Even when Kirk and McCoy were off philandering with all kinds of space chicks.
Favourite Character: Spock. I didn't realize how Vulcan I was until I watched this show. Leonard Nimoy is also just an awesome guy in general. Also, I liked Zachary Quinto's Spock in the new Star Trek films at once. But even if those films are flashy, I don't feel they captured what made the Original Series such a fascinating show to watch.
I'm very happy Nimoy reprised his role as Spock (or Spock Prime, I should say) in the new movies. Seeing him on screen again was the best part of the movie to me.
So there it is, those are all the TV shows I really love, and why. So I'm interested to hear what kind of shows you guys like. Again, don't feel compelled to be nearly as detailed as I am.
