That's pretty dope. As an AV technician though I couldn't help but notice how utterly shit the setup in the room looks rofl. Front projection on fast-fold screens with no dress, on safelocks with no skirting. Also, how much of this abuse can those mechanical keyboards take? Do they ever just fail in the middle of a combo?

Mechanical keyboards still go through wear and tear, so playing the same exact key configuration for an extended period affects the quality of the switches. Usually what happens is you'll get cases of misinputting where the switches are triggering earlier or later than expected, or just flat out not working at all. It's actually pretty common that peeps will need to completely replace a mechanical keyboard altogether because they fuckup the majority of comfortable key configurations to play with, lol.
I've actually already experienced some misinputting with my CM Storm Quickfire Pro and have had to change my key configuration twice. Basically, I'd be dropping my combo and missing randomly during multiple instances in a song play through.
In the case with Stian, he's had to completely change his key configurations multiple times, but his keyboard (Qpad MK50) has been able to handle his beatings.

Does anyone play on a Model M? I feel like the buckling spring design wouldn't succumb to wear and failure like modern "mechanical" keyboards do, but it'd probably be exhausting as fuck with the weight of those keys plus the massive hysteresis.

Jokingly, not seriously. The Model M is way too impractical for rhythm games because of its incredibly high latency and just the overall accentuation force required for inputting. It'd be incredibly difficult to gauge accuracy and it'd be tiring as fuck to play on, especially if you'd be playing fast and dense stuff as Stian does.

sentimental fuqboii thoughts incoming, since the topic really had me pondering for a bit.
What stepmania has contributed to my life that I am grateful for: - meeting some of my closest friends ever. - meeting my current partner (lol this is actually true). If this didn't happen, I'd've probably transformed into a r9k robot. - meeting other cool online people, especially at conventions and shit. Always interesting to meet the person behind the username/alias and get to know them. - molding my overall taste in music. I never really had an interest in music until I started playing rhythm games. - improving my self esteem a lot and some personality traits. Pretty self explanatory given my past shitlord history here. - distracting me during rough patches in life completely outside of my control.
Yeah that's about it I think

i definitely can't relate to any of this shit you and dan seem to get into. first of all i can't play the game and have never been able to make much of anything out of even watching people who are good play this game. it just looks like a bunch of arrows to me and the music is pretty annoying. i've been playing video games my whole life but i don't think i've managed to make many friends as a result of it.
really most people live and die without ever meeting people as interested in the same thing as you guys are apparently interested in this thing, it's kind of remarkable and basically impossible for me to understand the enthusiasm. but good on you.

It's like when you and I used to play only StarCraft and thought it was pretty much the best game ever.
