Has anyone ever really made a proper successor to the iPod classic? I realize phones have mostly killed off the market for these things, but I wouldn't mind having a dedicated music device with a ton of storage and good sound quality that I can use for shows or tossing in the car or whatever.

i think they still sell these things, but the idea of a dedicated music player (that can play pretty much every file format in high quality) is pretty much considered a niche electronic, and sadly priced accordingly. they're pretty expensive. just take a look at this fucking thing www.amazon.com/HIFIMAN-HM-901-Fidelity-Portable-Standard/dp/B00JX8GBW6like holy fucking moleys batman, not to mention it only has 128GB of SD storage. just use a phone/10

It actually really bugs me how expensive it is to buy a dedicated music player with lots of storage. SD cards are fine for phones and all, but I've had phones fuck up more frequently than my ipod classic 80gb ever did.
Shame that the headphone jack is busted on the ipod. Instead of getting it fixed I just plug it into my 2015 Altima and blast Run The Jews

This thing looks to be potentially decent: www.amazon.ca/X1-Portable-Resolution-Lossless-Player/dp/B00NS3MRKCQuality DAC and amplifier, line out mode for external amplifiers or mixers, wide format support including lossless FLAC, and a microSD slot for jamming music into it, all at a pretty reasonable price. This is pretty much exactly what I want, but I feel like the software on it is probably buggy Chinese garbage. Apple definitely killed it when it came to the interface on the iPods. fiio.net/en/products/18

i'm not sure how much i would worry about the firmware. i have seen some reviews of their music players, people seem to really like the FiiO brand at least. give it a shot if 128GB works for you

I've used the one my buddy has at work. It's pretty good, but the wheel crapped out after a few months of extensive use. Battery dies fairly quickly too.

Battery life is not a big deal for me since it'll almost always be plugged in, but the mechanical wheel failing is concerning.
