In this thread we give tribute to the greatest video game trailers of all time. Can be old as the 80s or recent as this year, whatever.
I don't even like the Xbox brand anymore in the slightest. They've fallen off so completely it's almost pitiful. But at one point in time, Halo was life. Halo was easily the biggest game on the planet and every guy loved it. I can watch this trailer today and still feel the pangs of nostalgia of that golden era when Master Chief was gaming's ultimate badass. I feel like this trailer alone is enough to justify Master Chief in Smash.
I still remember the date October 26th, 2006 by heart. How could I forget it, I watched this trailer at least 50 times. I barely remember anything about school, but I vividly remember literally begging my mother to take me to the damn game store at midnight until she finally gave in. I remember some kid calling his mom on the phone to come to ebgames at 11:45pm at shopper's world to bring his driver's license so he could prove he was 18. I remember going to my room to play the game and both of my older brother's curious as hell as to what this game I was going apeshit over was. And I remember my mother watching me play the game for the first time and cautiously remarking, "You know, I think this game is going to kill a lot of niggers." She was wrong of course, the game probably prevented a bunch of black kids from even joining a gang because staying at home playing San Andreas was too much fun. I remember buying the official soundtrack. Hell I even remember some of you guys being at my house playing the game at one point, that or playing it at other people's houses. The simple truth is, San Andreas is still my favourite GTA to date.
There's been a lot of Smash reveals over the years. More recent ones like Ridley, Banjo Kazooie and Joker from Persona 5 were all some of the more memorable ones. I still feel like Goku could top all of them, but until then I feel there's one Smash reveal that's indisputably the best ever. The combination of humour, the unexpectedness and the classic "SHOWTAIMU DA" from the Japanese trailer live at E3, all the ensuing memes that originated because of it. Snake is still the most surprising inclusion in Smash Bros of all, and this trailer shocked the Nintendo and Sony fanbases when it dropped.
And now for something more recent. I have a long history with Nintendo, from owning the original NES and SNES as a kid, eventually loving them through the N64 and Gamecube eras, and then slowly coming to despise them through the Wii and Wii U eras in which I completely lose my faith in the company. I sold all my Nintendo consoles and handhelds, I sold every single game. I wanted to wipe myself clean of a company that as far as I could tell, only cared about attracting casuals and young kids, and had lost sight of catering to the fans who had loved them for years upon years and made them what they are today. In 2017, two game trailers made me take the plunge to give Nintendo one last chance. For months I swore I'd never buy a Switch, but eventually the Mario Odyssey trailer won me over. When I eventually tried Zelda, a franchise I felt was horribly overrated and I had grown tired of as a child, I was surprised to find that Breath of the Wild was my favourite game in the series specifically because it was so completely unlike all the other games in the franchise. I think both of these trailers deserve to be placed amongst the greatest ever, but I have a special place in my heart for the Mario Odyssey trailer. The truth is, the Nintendo magic is even stronger than Disney's magic or any other production studio's magic. They might have missteps time and time again, but in the end Nintendo will always be the Heroes of Time that gaming will call upon when the industry needs innovation.
I know I'm probably the only person on this board who gives a damn about Guilty Gear, so I'll keep this one short and sweet. Arc System Works are absolutely the gods of anime fighting games, and Guilty Gear is the blazing, eternal spirit of everything ArcSys ever was and is. When this trailer dropped, it basically instantly became confirmed that Guilty Gear 2020 would end up being the prettiest video game of all-time, and probably the most "anime" anime game ever made. Heaven or Hell, Let's Rock!
Say what you will about Kojima's games, the man can direct a fucking trailer. Personally I loved MGSV and spent hundreds of hours just doing invasions and random shit in the game because the gameplay was so damn fun for me. I was slightly disappointed by the incompleteness of the story, but its obvious that Kojima wanted to add more to the game but was restricted by Konami execs who were decidedly demoting Kojima and replacing him with game developers focused on mobile gaming and pachinko/gambling machines in Japan. In a way the real phantom pain is the absence of all the content Kojima wanted to add to the game, but wasn't able to. With Death Stranding, I have absolute faith that being given carte blanche by Sony to do what the fuck ever and just roll with it will play into Kojima's favour. Game of the Year 2019 is already confirmed, and it has urination mechanics. My faith in Kojima is absolute, and regardless of how the game turns out it already has one of the greatest trailers ever.
And this one is maybe more sentimental than anything else. I personally believe that in the history of e3, there's been a lot of trailers that caused a huge reaction. However, none of them ever topped the absolute pandemonium caused by the most requested remake of all-time finally being confirmed.
I would have given up anything to be in the crowd on this day. People were visibly shedding tears.
I honestly teared up the first time I watched this gameplay trailer. Part of it was the music, part of it was the iconic shots recreated, and part of it was the full on realization that no, this is a real game, it's actually happening, it's not just a pipe dream.
I really have no idea if this game can live up to the insurmountable hype, I honestly doubt it. But just having the game exist means enough to me.
You guys should post game trailers that either left a deep impact on you or were from a game you remember being one of your favourites of all time.
