By the mandate of ProBoards itself, our board administrator has deleted the "vvindows me (nsfw, guro)" thread. This was sometimes referred to as the "unfortunate girl" thread. This thread's link was the 1st result for the search query "unfortunate girl". I don't blame him for abiding website's requests, I blame ProBoards for being lame.
Posted on May 26th, 2014 by myself in the Visual Media board, the vvindows me thread was a thread sharing some gifs created by the visual artist vvindows me, entitled the "unfortunate girl" series. These were a series of gifs depicting animated lolis getting brutally mauled to death by a machine with laser beams and spikes. I just figured it was an interesting display of visual arts talent and chose to share it with the board while knowing full well that the thread may eventually get deleted. I also clearly marked the thread with both "nsfw" and "guro" tags. Anyone who didn't know what these terms meant could look them up. Honestly, I didn't expect the thread to stay up for over 6 years. In that time, this thread became by far the most popular thread in the history of XF.
I really lament the state of the internet today and more largely than that, the state of the world itself today. Because there is no one harmed by an animated gif of cartoon characters. Back when I was a young teen the internet was truly a Wild West, people posted and shared exactly whatever the hell they wanted. 4chan had a /cake/ board. There was a guro board at one point on another imageboard. I was not particularly enamored by these things, but I appreciated that I could find these things if I ever wanted to see what they were about. I still remember my older brother inviting me to his room to watch footage of Saddam Hussein's sons being brutally assassinated by the US military forces in Iraq. Those guys literally got sawed in half by M16 bullet fire. I remember watching Saddam himself being hung to death in that room with George Bush and Colin Powell. This was a time and place where watching movies over the internet meant torrenting them. The world today is so much more censored than it was when I was a kid, I miss that Wild West every day.
The end of the vvindows me thread marks another sad moment to me where the internet becomes more watered down and boring than it was before. Sure, our little thread on this board was a very small thing. But it ended up being by far, the most popular thread in the history of this board which has stood up for over 15 years. It was normal to see literally no one browsing any other board on XF, but 30 people or more, sometimes hundreds browsing the visual media board because of that thread. The thread alone had 100,000s of views. The fact of the matter is, people wanted to see these gifs. They wanted to know what the art was. No other thread caused more users to register on XF, and many of them remarked that this board was the only place in which they could even see what these gifs were.
More and more I find myself less interested in even browsing the internet the way I used to. There was once a never ending stream of unique and bizarre things to be seen. It used to be so much fun, now the internet itself has become a confusing and oftentimes monotonous thing. Many crazy things I remember seeing as a youngster have been outright removed and lost to the sands of time. I'll say it one more time: I miss that Wild West. I miss being able to post whatever the fuck I wanted whereever. I miss when 4chan was actually really funny and not just a bunch of lazy shitposters rehashing the same tired memes. Sometimes I feel like the Last of the Mohicans, the last man standing so to speak from that old era who refuses to go quietly into that good night. It just motivates me to find other things in life to take up my time, because it's increasingly clear in this age of cancel culture that the old era of the internet when everything was wild and fun is obviously over. I remember watching the Chappelle Show in 2004 and thinking "man, if comedy can be this fucking golden today, who knows how incredibly outrageous comedy will be in 15 years!". Instead today in 2020, I am 100% sure that no one would ever be allowed to broadcast a show as funny as Chappelle's Show, because it's simply too offensive.
In fact, as my closing remarks let me put this as my last postulate, and the most resounding one in my heart: the fucking normies have made the internet boring as shit. When I was a kid, I was on the internet constantly. I ate breakfast next to my computer while browsing the net. I lurked all kinds of dumb forums and communities at the computer labs in school. I spent fucking hundreds of hours playing porn games on Newgrounds. I was considered a nerd, because I couldn't stop being fascinated by all this interesting and hilarious shit I kept finding every day on the internet. Other kids made fun of me, but I didn't care: the amusing things I found on the internet back then shaped who I am today. Nowadays I don't even really enjoy browsing the internet, because everyone has become the way I was as a kid. It's normal now, to not be able to stop browsing the internet. It's normal now, to try and shape an image of who and what you are on the internet for the world to see. No one at all seems to understand how sacred the art of anonymous shitposting was to the kids like me of that era, because no one wants to be anonymous anymore. People become millionaires just posting things on instagram now. No one tries to be funny or interesting anymore, everyone just wants to be cooler than everyone else. In a world where people have never cared more about who they are on the internet, I have never cared less. To the world, the internet is more important than its ever been. But to me, it's almost like the internet is on its death knell: everything I ever loved about it is coming to an end, becoming gentrified and homogenized for the mouthbreating, smoothbrained masses. More and more, I feel less interest in gaming and browsing the net and more interest in sports, outdoor activities, basically anything else. I feel like picking up a fucking book. Some good things have come of internet modernization, sure, but I think the things I treasured the most have become lost in the process.
Rest in peace vvindows me thread, we knew you too short a time.
