Let's make a list of pro artists, so I can torrent all their shit.

Alternative Rock
Muse - Popular music that doesn't absorb. I did not think it was possible.
Ratatat - Almost hip-hop-like at points, but it's all instrumental, so there's no fear. Some pretty slick tracks to be had.

Art Rock
Genesis - Pretty sweet songwriting and execution. Also got some strange vocal filters going on.

Avant-garde Metal
Diablo Swing Orchestra - They only made one album, but sweet Jesus Christ, it owns so hard I cream my pants every time I hear that cello.

Blues
Jeff Beck - Some Goddamn sweet songwriting and musical talent.

Chiptunes
she - A lot of it is pretty mediocre, but there are a few cool tracks to be had.

Electronica
Basement Jaxx - There are a few neat tracks to be had.
MSTRKRFT - Some Canadian dudes making slick beats.
Röyksopp - Leaning towards the more ambient side of things at points, but still remaining pretty cool.

Electropop
Yellow Magic Orchestra - These guys pretty much invented electronic music, and they did a pretty slick job of it. Some of their live stuff is actually superior to their studio recordings, busting out some slick guitar work.

Folk Metal
Turisas - RA RA RASPUTIN, LOVER OF THE RUSSIAN QUEEN; THERE WAS A CAT THAT REALLY WAS GONE.

Funk
Jamiroquai - Some white English guy that sounds like some small black chick.

Hard Rock
Led Zeppelin - Classic rock is pretty sweet.

Instrumental Rock
Jeff Beck - Here he is again, owning some more.

House
Daft Punk - Obv.
Takashi Fujimori - Some Japanese guy making slick beats.

Jazz
The Seatbelts - The only anime music I've ever heard that doesn't absorb cocks for breakfast. It's not even anime music, which is probably why I like it.
Sunlightsquare - Spacey ambient shit, with the too-awesome Steve Gadd.

Jazz Fusion
Brand X - Much cooler than the gay genre name implies.

Jazz Rock
Steely Dan - Sounds like a gay genre, but it's actually fucking amazing. Some more pro songwriting, combined with the legendary Steve Gadd drumming everything except Peg (he got fucking wasted on the day of the recording, so some nig came in and owned it up).

Power Metal
Blind Guardian - Carefully select your albums, and there's some sweet stuff to be had.

Progressive Death Metal
Opeth - Some goddamn amazing music combined with some inoffensive death metal vocals. Must get if you can tolerate the heavy parts.

Progressive Metal
Dream Theater - The de facto progressive metal band. High rate of awesome.
Liquid Tension Experiment - Dream Theater sans vocals. Also fucking awesome.

Progressive Rock
Gentle Giant - Almost folk-like at points. Pretty cool.
Kansas - They made more than two songs, and some of them are pretty sweet.
Steve Hackett - Ace of Wands is too slick.

Rock
Max Webster - The early stuff is pretty awesome.

Remixers
ilp0 - Christ, why do the Finnish own music so hard?

Symphonic Power Metal
Luca Turilli - Orchestral rape.

Synthpop
Slagsmålsklubben - So hard to find, but the reward far outweighs the effort.

Viking Metal
Týr - Some of the strangest chord progressions ever. Goddamn, they own.

OSTER Project would be pretty cool if they didn't absorb total cock at drum lines and generally abuse shitty Roland Sound Canvas instruments. I don't much care for piano songs composed in a piano roll and performed by a sound card.

I think I'll add a few.

Jazz:
Bohren & der Club of Gore - an actual jazz band. No solo stuff by some intensely worshiped man for once.

Kilimanjaro Dark Jazz Ensemble - another jazz group. It has some ambient and post-rock themes.

Industrial (may also include darkwave-stuff; they're too closely linked):
Ice Ages - good, true industrial stuff with hints of dark electro and EBM. Not bad at all.

:wumpscut: - constantly dubbed as garbage by hardcore industrial fans, but I find the band interesting. Obvious EBM influences, etc.

Die Form - electro-industrial stuff. The band has far too many recordings.

Darkwave:
Die Verbannten Kinder Evas - darkwave, but with more of an ambient and neo-classical approach. Not really industrial-y at all.

Anders Manga - darkwave mixed with modern hints of industrial and dark-electro. Not intelligent music, but fun.

Doom metal:
Acid Bath - I love this band. They incorporate doom, sludge, stoner, death metal influences, and even things such as blues rock and industrial.

Electric Horsemen - great doom/sludge. Not a lot to say about them.

Avant-garde (includes zeuhl and other variants):
Magma - great entry-level zeuhl/avant-prog. Great old Frenchmen.

Unexpect - avant-garde metal. Intensely talented band that implements just about anything into their cacophony. It's obvious that they love Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - avant-prog that may not be as dissonant as Unexpect, but plays with a larger variety of genres.

Ephel Duath - avant-garde metal. Skram, jazz-fusion, post-black, and plenty of other weird combinations to spot.

Skram/screamo/emotive hardcore (not the modern post-hardcore or metalcore with which the term is commonly mislabeled):
Circle Takes the Square - recognized skram, but extremely fun, introspective, and just plain orgasmic.

I Would Set Myself on Fire for You - post-rock/skram - kinda like Envy (who I believe started the mix). Just the saddest band.

Knotwork - not so much skram, but more emotive hardcore. Not an extensive discography, but a beautiful band.

L'Antietam - the more dissonant skram band. They highly abuse the soft-loud dynamic so popular with the genre.

Oh, Apollo! - progressive skrimz. Lots of the soft-loud dynamic and experimentation.

Post-rock:
Suffocate for Fuck Sake - post-rock, but more atmospheric-sludge influenced. Very good stuff.

Crippled Black Phoenix - may not be Sigur Ros, or any of the other popular post-rock bands, but it's highly enjoyable.

Detektivbryan - more indie rock and electronic influenced, but a very fun and cute band.

Efterklang - a post-rock band with a good variety of instruments and other perks to keep one listening.

Maserati - fun, beautiful stuff.

Good black metal (it exists):
Gris - absolutely beautiful black metal with plenty of folk and neo-classical influences. The surprising part is that they're from Canadia.

Make a Change...Kill Yourself - atmospheric with hints of neo-classical. Interesting instrumentation, etc.

Good or maybe slightly interesting country:

Those Poor Bastards - "gothic country" - or so they call themselves. Just imagine Varg moving to Illinois and picking up a new interest in music.

Blues rock:
Chris Cornell - cool, melancholy man.

Dax Riggs - proficient in blues and many forms of metal. Even folk. Very good artist.

Indie rock:
Owen - former vocalist for the now defunct emotive hardcore band American Football. Emotional guy.

Orion Rigel Dommisse - death-themed indie folk played by an eccentric girl.

Pleasure Forever - more experimental and gothic rock-ish, but indie enough. Simply a great band.

Moving Mountains - post-rock-ish, but indie enough, surely.

Folk rock:
Swans - okay, not entirely folk but enough folk to keep any fan listening. I suppose they're better coined as experimental rock. Then again, there's post-industrial hints.

Forseti - nice neo-folk. Melancholy and beautiful.

Angels of Light - incarnation of Swans. More folky, of course.

Te - more neo-folk. Similar to Forseti.

Tenhi - similar to Te and Forseti, but much better.

Technical death metal:
Anata - melodic and technical. Pretty cool.

Sleep Terror - lots of jazz breakdowns, instrumental, etc.

Lykathea Aflame - technical/atmospheric death even prog elitists love.

Atmospheric sludge (good listening when it's bleak and/or cold):
Callisto - heavy but soft, and goes on forever.

Minksk - doomy atmospheric sludge. Long lasting.

Neurosis - progressive/atmospheric sludge with a nice discography. It'd help with a gloomy day.
