It was midnight. I was cooped up in my room, as per usual, but an urge struck me. I wanted some Arizona iced tea, for some absurd reason. I considered going down to the convenience store just to pick a can up and be back in 10 minutes. However, of course, it being so late, I decided to ask Kuldeep to accompany me out of fear.
Kuldeep initially agreed, however, as time went on, he grew more fatigued, and ended up retiring to bed. Lily had as well, so it was just myself; no Tyler, as he was at Anime North. Yes, just me. I considered it; walking alone at night, just to get a can of iced tea? Worth it? Probably not, but I needed the cool night air to refresh myself.
My door was blocked from the inside by a wooden plank, as it always is at night - as such, I had to sneak out the back door quietly. Shutting the door with trepidation behind me, I swung open the backyard gate and proceeded on my way.
It was dark - the only thing illuminating the way were the streetlights, the garden lamps, and the bright moon casting its wondrous glow upon everything. Stars dotted the moderately cloudly steel blue sky, the moon pure and visible with nothing obstructing its path.
Cautiously, I proceeded at a brisk pace. My eyes shifted. My heart raced. My head darted from side to side, from front to back, to side. Every step I took, the subtle crunching of the dirt I would normally not hear echoed, resounding and reverberating through every alley and crawlspace in the vicinity. Was someone there to hear me or see me? I didn't know.
I arrived at the plaza, where the convenience store was. However, in front of it was a shady looking bunch of black males, dressed rather unsettlingly; that is, baggy pants, long t-shirts, bandanas. Obviously, if I had gone that way, it wouldn't have been a good decision. I walked past as a result of instinct, realizing I would now have to trek to the gas station in order to satisfy my desire for a can of something. I had already snuck out and come this far; I may as well go all the way.
I walked along the lonely road, a car passing by now and then. It was eerie, how the street I usually walked along, bustling with activity, became quiet in the dead of night, making me walk along nervously. Every car that slowed by me made my heart race. Someone could step out. Why would they choose me? I had nothing on me, but 4 dollars. Still, the premise frightened me.
I reached the Brampton Towers, an apartment complex. More shady characters loitered around the entrance to the parking lot and the general area within, so I darted across the street to the other side and increased my already swift pace to bypass this possible threat.
Entering the mall parking lot, not a single car dotted the premises. The parking lot lights made visible the cement markings, none of which were used. The gas station was in sight. I was still as nervous, looking around. Nobody was around; but if someone did come up, nobody would be there to see.
I finally reached the gas station, and entered. I scanned the drinks aisle, but no Arizona can. I grabbed a can of Monster, paid for it, and left the station. The walk back was not nearly as unnerving; the energy drink calmed me somehow, and the need to look around constantly died, though I still did it just to stay on the safe side.
A rabbit jumped in front of me. I jumped and nearly yelped, but managed to keep my composure. I let out a sigh and a chuckle, and proceeded on my way.
The shady groups were gone, making the return uneventful, but it gave me time to enjoy the crisp, cool night air, and the beautiful glow of the radiant moon. The stars in the sky were more luminous than I ever recalled, and the silence was more than welcome to me.
I snuck back in the back door, afraid one of my parents had awoken, come downstairs and locked the door. However, it slid open, and relief swept over me. I was back home after an enlightening walk, more awake than I was when I left.
I'm sipping my Monster right now, chronicling my little journey. Was this worth it? No, but it sure was fun. I should do this again.
