I think it's less an issue of people being retarded than it is an issue of people wanting to be able to talk to other people online, and everyone using MSN because everyone else uses MSN.

Well yeah, but I'd rather use the friendlier monopoly with a working switchboard and open protocol.

People are incredibly resistant to change.

If I used this I'd have to sign into it every time I was on MSN, wait for people over the course of several years (roughly a decade and a half) to actually use it on a regular basis while signing into it all the time (pretty much as often as I do with MSN) and actively encouraging people to use it and then hoping that other people actually use it while absolutely no one else does.
It's an overwhelmingly losing battle and I'm not going to fight it. When it's something like getting people to use a new media format it makes sense because people can just have an appliance in their homes for whenever they want to for their personal purposes. But when it comes to a huge phenomenon like IMing, it requires a lot more time and effort on part of the users to make it catch on.

If you're using Pidgin, it's not hard to just sign into both accounts at the same time and group the contacts. I just prioritize people's XMPP accounts over their MSN ones. Actually convincing convincing people is another thing, and it is going to be very slow, but the retarded thing is that most people already have a Google Talk account without knowing it, unless they still use that piece of shit known as Windows Live Hotmail.

Firefox does this too. Shift + Enter gives .net. Ctrl + Shift + Enter gives .org.
