I'm honestly starting to reconsider my statement that this is 2016's Game of the Year. It's not a fair assessment: it's better to say that Overwatch is Game of the Decade until proven otherwise in 2017-19. It's already very obvious that no one will take it seriously if any gaming journalism company gives GotY 2016 to any game besides Overwatch, the better point of debate is whether or not any game made from 2010-present really stacks up against Overwatch.
I've really given it some serious thought. We have here a game that has 15 million players, given Activision-Blizzard (the company that makes Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Diablo, StarCraft, Hearthstone, Skylanders and Destiny among other massive selling titles) the biggest financial quarter in the company's history (soon to be the biggest earning year in the company's history), Pornhub nearly crashed from the masses of people searching for Overwatch porn, biggest Open Beta of all-time, toppled League of Legends as the most popular game in Korea, has gotten Shaquille O'Neal to buy his own Overwatch team, is the fastest selling game in Chinese PC market history (spoilers: Chinese people almost never pay for video games), spawned hundreds of Facebook fan groups and twitter accounts, earned over $300 million just in DLC sales (which you unlock in the game just by playing), Twitch frontpage is literally Overwatch tournaments half the time, now people are demanding Blizzard make Overwatch the movie.
Really all things considered the only game that might be another GotD contender is Minecraft. Even though now it's pretty much just become a lego simulator for kids, you can't deny how huge of a phenomenon the game was and still is. I feel like the accessibility of Minecraft to young children might be its biggest selling point.
Still I feel like Overwatch is just a much more masterfully crafted game, has so much better potential for growth as an eSport and a brand. Just the barebones product was so good that it sold millions within days and they continuously tweak and add more to the game. The biggest problem that the game has to overcome is that it's not casual at all and it's not free to play, the casual audience will always be the biggest selling audience (which is why Pokemon Go has been doing so well and why Angry Birds became a global phenomenon). I think by this time next year we'll see Overwatch steadily hold the number 1 rank on Twitch and still be selling copies consistently.
The biggest problem that the game has to overcome is that it's not casual at all
The game seems like it can be played and enjoyed by casuals even if they're not the target audience. All the people I know that are playing it I would consider to be casual. The same is true for LoL; probably 90% of its players are complete garbage and don't play seriously at all but are still satisfied with just playing unranked games. StarCraft 2 didn't have this at all.

I see this nerdy weeaboo playing that fucking rhythm game every day on the bus. it's either that or pokemon go, i feel sad every time i see a grown man or woman playing that shit. comparing a $40 game to mobile games that anyone can play for free or for $5 or whatever is retarded and you know it. it's just hilarious because Overwatch is against all these free to play MOBA and FPS games and its viewership and playerbase is slowly eating theirs, making tons more in profits from loot box sales. I can't wait for Halloween, you just know they're going to unveil a shitload of Halloween costumes for every character and make another few hundred million off of skins.
so I actually downloaded and played paladins for over two hours. I don't know how to feel about this game other than being a poor man's overwatch. I actually find it sad that this isn't even a chinese bootleg and is published by hi-rez.
>7 playable heroes champions upon install >every game is capture objective and escort payload >obvious one but 95% of the characters' skills and animations are copied from overwatch >either have to play enough to buy the rest of the champions or shell out $15 for the dlc >limited selection of maps. when you're just starting out, you play the same fucking map over and over again >I don't understand the damage scaling for each of the heroes champions >hanzo with big boobs has an even more retarded arrow hitbox than hanzo. she also deals 700 damage regardless of where the arrow lands on the enemy >horses materializing out of thin air 1 second before the objective starts >horses animation literally looks like it's gliding on ice skates >I honestly can't tell when I'm being shot at and dying because there's no UI feedback and I have to constantly look at the health bar
I mean without comparing it to overwatch and ignoring my bias, I guess it's a decent game, I wouldn't say that it's god awful.
in ow related news, I'm going to hit level 100+ soon, shit I played a lot

psh 1st prestige is nothing man. there are no lifers i have on my bnet who are on their 5th/6th prestige already. so many qp monsters just group all day and rack up mass exp. in the end exp is just good for loot boxes, the good thing is you'll get a bunch of new loot boxes quickly after each prestige. it's funny when you see people who are level 500 something but they have no rank or rank in silver/bronze or something
